Civil War Artillery Leather Limber Bumper Marked Allegheny Arsenal 1863
This is an original Civil War Era Artillery Leather Limber Bumper Pad, marked Allegheny Arsenal 1863. This dark brown leather limber bumper pad measures 4- 1/2" bore diameter by 5" high. The bumper contains its original pin to secure it to a limber shaft. The bumper pad is marked "Allegheny Arsenal 1863" on the surface of the bumper. The pad is in well maintained condition with only a thin crack in the leather on one side. These were used to safely pad a cannon limber (ramrod) to prevent damage to munitions while loading the muzzle. "The Allegheny Arsenal, established in 1814, was an important supply and manufacturing center for the Union Army during the American Civil War and the site of the single largest civilian disaster during the war. The explosion at the Arsenal was overshadowed by the Battle of Antietam, which occurred on the same day near the town of Sharpsburg, Maryland. Work at the Arsenal continued, and a new lab was constructed by the following year.
