Django Reinhardt
(1910—1953) promotional poster issued in 1941 by French record label Disques Swing, a label started by Charles Delaunay and Hugues Panassié in 1937 to provide for the needs of the burgeoning French jazz market. It was the first record label dedicated exclusively to jazz. Reinhardt was the first major jazz talent to emerge from Europe and remains the most significant. With violinist Stéphane Grappelli, Reinhardt formed the Paris-based Quintette du Hot Club de France in 1934. The group was among the first to play jazz that featured the guitar as a lead instrument. Reinhardt recorded in France with many visiting American musicians, including Coleman Hawkins and Benny Carter, and briefly toured the United States with Duke Ellington’s orchestra in 1946. He died suddenly of a stroke at the age of 43. The poster features striking artwork by André, with his imprint to the top right corner. Museum quality.
The poster measures 37.8 x 56.7 cm (approx. 15" by 22.3" inches) and is beautifully printed on thin, uncoated paper stock. Printer’s imprint (Imp. A. Karcher, Paris) to the bottom right corner.
