Dug Civil War 1862 US Naval Fuse

Description

This 1862 dated naval fuse was dug by me in the vicinity of Ft. Darling, Va. The Union Navy attacked this Fort in May,1862 attempting to reach Richmond. The Monitor was also there, but from what I have read, the U.S.S. Galena was only ship that was able to bear their guns on the Fort. The fort sat on a bluff 90 ft. above the James. This was the the only attempt by the Union to try to reach Richmond by water.
